Do I need to remove
my old insulation before adding new?
Many homeowners inquire about removing the old insulation from
their attic, rarely is this needed. We
recommend removing old insulation when the old insulation has
been fire damaged, water damaged or heavily infested with
rodents.
Most homes have some old or "existing" attic insulation already
in their attic. Typically we just add more insulation to what
you already have in order to bring the attic up to an R-30 or
R-38 rating. We
actually can save you money by using your existing insulation as
a base and installing enough additional material over it to
bring the attic up to correct department of energy recommended
levels.
In the rare instances where insulation removal is required, we
hand-remove the fiberglass rolls and pack them in bags that are
carefully removed from your attic. If the attic has blown
material, we use a large vacuum to remove all the material. The
vacuum is usually outside the house and this creates a "negative
pressure" in the attic such that air is being drawn up into the
attic, this ensures a clean job where little or no debris enters
the home.
Spot Removal
Fiberglass insulation (rolled or blown) makes a welcome home to
rodents and insects. We can remove insulation and clean in areas
that are affected. We then install environmentally friendly
cellulose material that offers greatly improved
thermal benefits, the cellulose insulation tends to reduce
or eliminate rodent or insect infestations.
